Dual es un álbum de cuatro aclamados músicos irlandeses y escoceses: Éamon Doorley , Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (ambos destacados de Danú ), Julie Fowlis y Ross Martin .

Caedmon - Caedmon's Hymn

El legendario álbum folk autoeditado por este cuarteto de estudiantes de la Universidad de Edimburgo cuenta con connotaciones progresivas, de jazz y espirituales. Emitido en calidades limitadas (alrededor de 500), fue su único lanzamiento antes de disolverse en 1978. Muy apreciado por los fanáticos del folk ácido y el rock cristiano

The Scottish group Caedmon’s only Ip rested in relative obscurity for years until one of the 500 copies turned up in the early ’90s. The band was contacted, a few stray copies were unearthed, and collector mania set in, aimed at procuring what some were proclaiming to be the best folkrock album ever recorded, Christian or otherwise. So does Caedmon live up to all the hype? Absolutely yes! Wow!

The professional standards set by this custom are so astonishing all other Christian folk albums sound anemic by comparison. The production, the arrangements, the playing, the songwriting, the enamoring vocals of lead singer Angela Naylor – everything on this album is A+ throughout. ‘Ten Maidens Fair’ opens in the roguish tradition of Steel eye Span as it tells Christ’s parable amid cascades of mandolin that duel with biting fuzz guitar – a frequent combination here that has lent folks to describing Caedmon’s music as “acid” or psychedelic folk. ‘Maker Man’ has a cool jazzy feel with some nice bongo accompaniment that’s prominent throughout the Ip.

‘Death Of A Fox’ introduces the proficient cello playing of Ken Patterson. This song is truly “progressive folkrock” – a fast aggressive piece with a melodic center section that combines classical mood with traditional Scottish jigs and reels One of the males takes over lead vocals for ‘Sea Song’, a touching ballad that evokes an air of sadness as a lone electric lead plays over soft keyboards and acoustic guitar. ‘Asian’ follows with a vengeance and some of the most lethal fuzz on the album. ‘Living In The Sunshine’ jams with a touch of funky syncopation. ‘Storm’ on the other hand is an intricate and mesmerizing folk/psych masterpiece that cites Mark 4:35-41 as its inspiration.

Mandolin and cello compete at breakneck speed in ‘Columbus Song’ which tells the story of a conflict between a druid and holy man. ‘Smile On Your Face’ provides some straightforward jamming British folkrock, while ‘Caedmon’s Hymn’ closes the Ip with a solemn meditative prayer backed by recorder and floating harmonies Two additional songs appear on a 45 that was originally included with the Ip – ‘Beyond The Second Mile’ (yet another evocative ballad that provides Angela’s most captivating vocal performance yet) and the Negro spiritual ‘Give Me Jesus’. Got all that? OK, the bad news: in the rare event that a copy does turn up it’s usually in the $1200+ range, Sigh. Ah, but there’s good news, too: the album was re-issued in 1994 on both vinyl and CD (and for considerably less than a house payment, too!). This re-issue includes both songs from the single. Obviously I’ve gone to great lengths here to describe this wonder Still it’s difficult to put these sounds into words that do it justice – there’s so much emotion and depth in here that can only come through the listening experience. I certainly hope you’ll have that opportunity.

Julie Fowlis - Alterum (2017)

Julie Fowlis nos presenta una vez más una fiesta de hermosas canciones para saborear y relajarse. Esta es una grabación impecable que se acerca a la perfección como nadie podría esperar. Su voz esta mejor que nunca y canta un par de canciones en inglés esta vez le ha dado una nueva dimensión. Además de su selección de canciones impecable, Julie y su compañero Eamon Doorley han reunido a un maravilloso elenco de músicos de apoyo, y la producción y la ingeniería están a la altura del mismo estándar.

Las notas del libreto nos informan que la idea original era explorar canciones de lo sobrenatural y aunque mi Gaélico escocés es casi inexistente "Oran an Roin" es una de las canciones que son comunes a las tradiciones de Irlanda y Escocia. La música es muy sugerente en este tema, como lo es a lo largo de la grabación. Hay una serie de musicos irlandeses presentados en Alterum y uno de los más impresionantes es la joven violinista Aoife Ni Bhriain, quien hizo una pequeña gira con Julie y Kris Drever el año pasado y es un nombre para tener en cuenta. O'Bhriain hace una bonita y lastimosa introducción en "Loch Alainn", a lo que Mike McGoldrick agrega adornos en la flauta antes de que Fowlis eleve el ritmo ayudado por un excelente arreglo de cuerdas.

El álbum está lleno de delicias similares. "Fear a 'Bhrochain / Dòmhnall Binn" se balancea bastante, mientras que "Dh'èirich Mi Moch Madainn Cheòthar" tiene una introducción de percusión con una hermosa armonía. Una de mis obras favoritas de todos los tiempos "Camarinas" (grabada por Luar na Lubre) es una hermosa melodía sobre un pueblo en la costa noroeste de Galicia y Julie comienza en Galego antes de cantar la traducción escocesa. es casi, pero no exactamente, como la original (grabada en el CD "XV Anniversario" de Luar na Lubre).

Silly Wizard - Kiss The Tears Away (1987)

Silly Wizard fue una banda de folk escocés, formada alrededor de 1971 en Edimburgo por Johnny Cunningham (violín, viola, mandola, voz), Bob Thomas (guitarra, mandolina, mandola, banjo, concertina) y Gordon Jones (guitarra, bodhrán, voz, bouzouki, mandola). Actuaron en el Triangle Folk Club durante un tiempo, dando posteriormente una gira por Francia en 1972. Poco después firmaron un contrato con Transatlantic Records para grabar un álbum con Maddy Taylor, quien había cantado con ellos en la gira.

Aly Bain & Ale Möller - Beyond The Stacks

Aly Bain and Ale Möller are tremendously good together -- but then again, you can hardly ask for a better duo, where the Scots/Shetland sound of fiddler Bain meets the several instruments (mandola, harmonica, Jew's harp) of Swedish folk legend Möller. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more simpatico duo, meeting, for the most part, on the middle ground of Shetland music, but played with glorious finesse (just listen to the breathtaking delicacy of "Da Slockit Light," for example). They're perfectly at home with uptempo material, but it's on the slower pieces that the beauty of this pairing truly comes through, whether it's "Hector the Hero," where Bain caresses his fiddle lines and Möller gives spare, emotional support, or the lament "Auld Swaara." When a record is this lyrical, there's absolutely no need for a voice -- or even any more instruments. There's an empathetic communication between the two that knows when to fill the gaps and when to leave space. At a little under 50 minutes it might seem short by today's standards, but the disc is so dense with melody that it truly seems longer (in the very best way). The Swedish tunes here mesh perfectly with those from Shetland, showing just how one tradition feeds into another. This isn't their first recording together (that was in 1999, Fully Rigged), but age has brought a true patina of beauty to their work together. Exquisite is a word that's overused at times, but it describes this album perfectly.
