Beltaine - Miusjik

The band Beltaine was formed in 2002 in Katowice. The first concerts the band played in the composition based on traditional instruments (guitar, violin, accordion, bodhran), at a later time their sound has been enhanced with a bass guitar and percussion. The initial repertoire of the band consisted of popular Irish and Scottish folk tunes. The original team consisted of - Grzegorz Chudy, Adam Romański, Luke Kulesza, Bartlomiej Dudek, Danuta Anna Badura and Adams.
In 2003 the band began touring outside the province of Silesia. The band performer among others in Toruń and at the Celtic Culture Festival in Dowspud. Since then the group performs intensively in the whole country. In September 2003 the first Celtic Music Festival "Castle" in Bedzin was organized, that Beltaine hosts and co-organizes until now.
In 2004 the band recorded their first album "Rockhill", that was the musical illustration of a Beltaine’s holyday celebrated in Ireland. Tracks consisted mostly of traditional Celtic tunes and a few original songs (such as Beltaine, The Sea of Irish Dream and Rockhill), the album also began to show musical trends of the team to combine the music of Brittany, Ireland and Scotland, with other types of music. Guest starring on the album include Jan Gałczewski, Catherine Czerniak, and known from the group Viva Flamenco guitarist Michael Czachowski. Album Rockhill was awarded the "Virtual Gesle" (Internet opinion poll co-organized by the Polish radio station) for Best Folk Album of 2004.[2] Rockhill has also received the title of "megadisc 'Radio Krakow in the competition. This year, the group violinist Anna Badura left, whereas Jan Gałczewski joined the band permanently.
In 2005 Jan Kubek joined the ranks of the band playing percussion instrument (i.e. tabla, darabuka, conga, cajon ). Group has launched numerous concerts abroad, within 5 years their credits include Beltaine in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Moldova, Switzerland, Lithuania, Portugal, France, Italy, Malaysia and Mexico.
Search for their own style and the possibility of expanding repertoire resulted in invitation for the cooperation with 2006 percussionist Mateusz Sopata. The team also received a proposal to contribute to the music accompanying the video game The Witcher.
The next year was marked by of recording of the KoncenTrad. The album is the brave combination of Celtic tradition and modernity. The album does not lack loud and rhythmic tracks like a Technogaita and ballads Ye Yacobites or Parcel of Rogues. The album with a guest appearance of Indian musician Giridhar “Gathamˮ Udupa, is regarded as the most rock in the band repertoire. A year later the publishing house was awarded with the subsequent The Virtual Primitive Fiddles, which became the ticket to playing the live concert in Agnieszka Osiecka’s Studio on the air of The Third Programme of Polish Radio.

Soisín is the ninth studio album from Kíla. Portraying a softer side to the band, the album is entirely instrumental and features violin, saw, guitar, mandolin, flute, uilleann pipes, double bass and percussion. Kila - Kila & OKI

The Irish group Kila's recording with Oki, the Ainu musician they met in Japan and played with at the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures. Oki traveled to Ireland and stayed in the Kila studio in Kildare where they recorded continuously for eight days over Easter. A beautiful mix celebrating and fusing the Irish and Ainu traditional sounds with some incredible results. The Ainu are an indigenous people from the North of Japan, and Oki is the most celebrated musician to return to playing their traditional music. He plays the Tonkori, a long thin stringed instrument which produces incredible bass lines. Like Kíla, Oki has mixed the traditional with modern music influences including dub reggea to create unique style of music.

Kila - Luna Park

After a brief diversion with their stage soundtrack recording Monkey!, Kila returns to task with another clinic in rhythmic, melodic, original music performed on Irish instruments. Kila excels in heavily layering their instruments with varying dynamics, slowly building to crescendos of orgasmic proportions and tapering off to a gentle conclusion, techniques best exemplified on "Glanfaidh Me" and "Baroki." The surprise track on Luna Park is "Béilín Méala," a beautiful, haunting piece with an underlying 1950s doo wop vibe. Sung in Gaelic and featuring low whistles, fiddle, double bass, and electric guitar, this song alone is worth the price of the album. Yes, it's out of character for this band, but its simplistic allure is intoxicating. Also veering from their expected instrumental and vocal tendencies is the gentle a cappella piece "Maith Dhom." But given Kila's full range of emotions and dynamics, this track serves as a reminder of the band's scope. In the realm of contemporary Irish music, Luna Park is a sheer masterpiece.

Kila - Monkey!

Inspired by the sixteenth century Chinese folkloric tale of the magic Monkey King and the many literary works that echo that tale, Monkey! is an unlikely project from the Irish band Kila. While they do a respectable job of recreating moody Asian music suitable for a cinematographic production, the music on this album doesn't actually accompany a film. Perhaps in the collective minds of Kila there exists a coherent picture but until one actually materializes the listener will somehow have to make sense of the ethereal Asian soundscapes sprinkled with minimalist rock and traditional Irish music. Less than a handful of the 17 tracks even remotely resemble anything that Kila has recorded in the past, and that similarity has more to do with their use of frenzied rhythms and not their use of traditional Irish instruments coupled with their erstwhile unique arrangements. Interesting yes, but hardly reflective of the innovative sound that has adorned the recordings of Kila in the past.

Kila - Lemonade & Buns

Inevitably, any genre of music will have its traditionalists and its innovators. Irish/Celtic music is no different--there are still plenty of Irish artists who play traditional jigs, reels and airs the way their great grandparents played them, and there are others who are committed to forging ahead and pointing Irish/Celtic music in new directions. One such Celtic band is Kíla, whose Lemonade and Buns combines Irish/Celtic music with elements of African, Middle Eastern and East European music. While Kíla essentially comes from the Irish school of Celtic music (as opposed to the Scottish or Breton schools), this CD is hardly oblivious to the Celtic sounds of Scotland. And much to its credit, Kíla makes such experimentation sound organic and logical rather than unnatural or forced. There's a definite freshness to Lemonade and Buns, which won't appeal to Celtic purists but is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who is seeking something fresh and challenging from Celtic music.

V.A. - The Shrine Afrodigital

Kila - Live at Vicar Street

kilaKila are due to release of the first compilation “Best Of’ album from Irish band Kíla on September 11th. The 2CD set contains tracks recorded over nearly two decades (1991-2009) and includes favourites such as tribal anthem Bí Ann, the ‘Pacabel’s Canon Song’ Leath ina Dhiaidh a hOcht and title track from album Tóg é go Bóg é. To coincide with this ‘Best Of’ release the band will be perform all their hits live at Vicar St. this December 19th. Tickets are €30 on sale now through Ticketmaster and other usual outlets nationwide. www.ticketmaster.ie

Kíla members met in Coláiste Eoin, south Dublin and grew as they did their apprenticeship busking on Grafton Street, alongside contemporaries Mic Christopher, Glen Hansard and Paddy Casey. The original line-up included members who would later join The Frames, Dead Can Dance and The Mary Janes. Their current line-up has been together for thirteen years and includes three Ó Snodaigh brothers, Colm, Rónán and Ross, Hogan brothers, Lance and Brian, Eoin Dillon and Deirdre Armstrong.

Collaboration and an openness to different musical influences has become an enduring philosophy with Kíla. In recent times the group have worked with notable Indian tabla player, producer, actor and soundtrack composer, Zakir Hussain as well as being invited to perform with U2 & The Dubliners among others on ‘The Ballad Of Ronnie Drew’ as well as releasing an album with Japanese/Ainu musician Oki.

A globetrotting outfit almost since their inception in the late 80’s, Kíla have often captured as many fans abroad as in Ireland. This summer alone they travelled across Europe and Scandinavia to perform and been invited as far afield as Zimbabwe and Singapore. Their live performance, a fusion of many styles of music over a foundation of Irish traditional, and their use of the Irish language has gained them fans and respect across the globe. In Ireland they have a rock reputation, their concerts a far cry from the norm of a traditional band, making them hard to categorise and gloriously free from music industry restraints. The band set up their own label in 1991 to allow them release albums and they have since grown into their own mini industry.

Kila - Tog E Go Bog E

In the tradition of Mouth Music, the Afro Celt Sound System, and, to some degree, Capercaillie, Kila blends Celtic folk music with Afro-European rhythms; the band has achieved huge success in Ireland, where this album achieved gold record status. And it's pretty easy to see why: the combination of Irish melodies and Afrobeat rhythms is a winning one, and Kila's approach is unique enough for the band to stand out in an increasingly crowded field. They're far more traditional in orientation than Mouth Music ever were; the electric guitars and exotic percussion are there to serve the tunes, not the other way around, and their sound is much more down to earth than that of the famously slick Capercaillie. Singer Ronan O'Snodaigh has a truly unique voice, and he uses it to good effect on the lovely "Bi Ann" and the title track; there are also lots of great instrumentals, mostly taken at mid-tempo with fretless electric bass and African percussion percolating along underneath. If you're looking for something a bit different in traditional Irish music, this band is for you.

Kila - Mind The Gap

It took three years, but this is the follow-up to Kila's 1992 debut, Handel's Fantasy. While that album incorporated a traditionally based style of playing, this release implements more modern techniques. With more prominent use of electric guitar and world rhythms, Mind the Gap is the logical extension of "Four Ages of Man" from their previous record, a song whose style foretold of changes to come. "Féach" is a rhythm and chanting piece from percussionist Ronan O'Snodaigh, followed by "Finnegan," a haunting fiddle piece by Dee Armstrong which segues nicely into the instrumental Celtic rocker "Odlums' Wild Oats," which features Colm O'Snodaigh on flute and an underlying Eno-esque guitar line from Eoin O'Brien. "Tatiana" is a bluesy acoustic number performed on traditional Irish instruments, save for the electric bass, and "5:30" begins like a hard-rocking mid-'70s Steeleye Span or Horslips, only to be interposed by some quirky brass in the final minute, creating an unconventional yet cool conclusion to the tune. Largely instrumental, Kila keeps this album interesting with a wide variety of instruments (uilleann pipes, fiddles, whistles, percussion) coupled with creative arrangements. "Ezekiel" is an up-tempo worldbeat number featuring a funky bass from Ed Kelly and impressive interplay between flutist O'Snodaigh and low whistler Rossa O'Snodaigh. The album concludes with another rocking piece, "Islandbridge," which oddly includes no electric guitar or conventional drums; the instrumental punch is provided by the Irish pipes, acoustic guitar, and fiddle, proving that Celtic rock can emanate from virtually all acoustic instruments.
